https://embraceyoursmile.com/ Dr. Megan LeCornu, Board Certified Orthodontist in Santa Clarita, CA, answers a top question orthodontists are asked about getting braces in Santa Clarita. At what age should I bring my child to see an orthodontist?
Hi guys. We’re continuing on our quest to answer the top ten most commonly asked questions that I get as an orthodontist. Today the question I want to address is a question I get all the time. It is at what age should I bring my child to see an orthodontist? What I tell patients is we usually like to see a patient at the age of seven. That’s not just something I personally like to do, it’s actually the recommendation by the American Association of Orthodontics. You may say to yourself, “Wow, that’s really young. Why so young?” The reality is is it’s very, very, very rare that a child at the age of seven will need any orthodontic treatment at that point, okay?
The reason we like to see them at that age is because they’re starting to develop some permanent teeth. That sometimes can go off course and we really like to monitor the development of those teeth because sometimes we can do something as simple as getting a baby tooth out early if there is a problem. That can completely eliminate more serious problems down the road. Really, the reason we like to screen patients early is because that’s when we can do more conservative and interceptive type treatments. It honestly makes things easier for your child down the road, for you down the road, and honestly even for the orthodontist down the road.
That’s why we do recommend seeing patients at the age of seven. It’s not because we want to get them into treatment. In fact, it’s our offices philosophy that the best treatment we can do is the least amount of treatment to get a child to an ideal result, okay? Ideally, if we can wait until all the permanent teeth are in place, then that’s our goal. However, that being said, there are some cases that do need early treatment. My next video will address that question, what is with some of the kids that are in treatment early and will my child need early treatment? That’ll be our next question. All right, well I hope I answered that for you guys. Have a great day.
